“Improv’s a smash hit”
Back in the 90s staying up late to watch Whose Line Is It Anyway? was one of the highlights of my week.
Years later and I'm sat in a cold pub waiting for a live improvised comedy show to start. A few people begin to trickle in and take their seats in front of the small stage.
Comedy group Instant SOOP appear on stage and are introduced by the slightly Clive Anderson-like compere, Vincent Adams.
Having heard about the group when they were runner-up in the Best Comedy section at The Guide Awards, I was expecting big things.
The compere interacted with the audience and the performers - Nathan, Alice, Phil and Rachel - created sketches from the audience's ideas. The performers were quick-thinking and witty.
The improvised sketches that followed varied from the side-splittingly funny to the outright bizarre.
Best bits included a song about audience-member Danny the plasterer sung in unison and an interview set-up where three performers answered questions by saying a single word in turn.
At times genius and sometimes just plain silly. A must for any fan of Whose Line Is It Anyway?

"Witty and hilarious improv gold"
“Oh how we laughed. Instant Soop at the Spring Arts and Heritage Centre quite simply blew me away. With sparkling wit, bounds of talent and unstoppable enthusiasm, Soop's four performers and one musician created for us the most diverse, bizarre but none the less intelligent pieces of theatre with nothing more than a few audience titbits to guide them. This is improvisation at its best; fun, silly and exciting, with spot on characterisation and imaginative plots, it was all I could do to not jump up there with them...”

"Performance with all the trimmings"
“an extremely entertaining evening spent in the company of a talented cast who where prepared to, for want of a better term, "put themselves out there" in that they took risks and weren't afraid to go with the flow, all of which worked to great comic effect and left the audience fully satisfied...more”

“I was frequently laughing out loud. The performers were relaxed and inventive, and deserved a larger audience. Catch it if you can...more”
